Terms of Service

The ground rules.

Effective date: August 27, 2026

These terms govern your use of the ScrollScout iOS app, Chrome extension, and scrollscout.app website (together, "ScrollScout"), operated by Henno Fourie ("we", "us"). By downloading, installing, or using ScrollScout you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the app or extension.

What ScrollScout is

ScrollScout is a screen-time companion. It adds a brief check-in before apps or websites you choose, helps you set an intention and a time window, and can hide selected website feeds until you choose to open them. It is a self-management tool that depends on permissions you grant and can revoke at any time.

ScrollScout is not medical advice. It is a wellbeing tool, not a treatment for addiction or any health condition. If your relationship with your phone is seriously affecting your life, please talk to a professional.

Your license

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use ScrollScout on devices and browser profiles you own or control, subject to the applicable App Store and Chrome Web Store terms. The app, extension, their design and code, and the Scout character are our intellectual property; you may not copy, modify, resell, or reverse-engineer them except where the law says we can't stop you.

iPhone subscriptions

Fair use

Don't abuse the service: no attempting to circumvent purchases, no probing or attacking our infrastructure or third-party services the app relies on, and no using the app in a way that breaks the law. We may suspend or terminate access that violates these terms.

Third-party services

The iPhone app relies on Apple (App Store, Screen Time / Family Controls), RevenueCat (subscription management), PostHog (product analytics), and AppsFlyer (install analytics). The Chrome extension uses Chrome's extension APIs and makes no network requests. The applicable third-party terms and privacy policies apply to their services. How data flows through them is described in our Privacy Policy.

If you downloaded ScrollScout from the App Store, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies, and Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these terms with the right to enforce them.

Disclaimers

ScrollScout is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We don't guarantee the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will reduce your screen time — that part is a team effort between you and a small pixel owl.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of ScrollScout. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.

Changes to the app or these terms

We may update the app and these terms. If we make material changes to the terms, we'll update the effective date above and note the change in the app's release notes. Continuing to use ScrollScout after changes take effect means you accept them.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Nothing in this clause deprives you of consumer protections you're entitled to under the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
