A TikTok time limit that actually holds
TikTok's built-in limit is a polite suggestion, and the iPhone's Ignore button is one tap away. A limit that holds needs two things neither offers: a decision made before the feed starts, and an end the feed cannot talk you out of.
What TikTok's built-in limit does
TikTok ships its own controls under Settings and privacy, then Screen time: a daily limit, sleep reminders, and a passcode gate. Turn them on, they cost nothing. But notice the shape: the limit interrupts you mid-scroll, exactly when the feed has the most momentum, and the same screen offers to wave you through. For You is very good at making one more prompt feel like part of the show.
Screen Time's version, and the Ignore tap
The iPhone's App Limits can be stricter if you configure them fully. Block at End of Limit, a passcode, and a matching limit on the website close the obvious holes; the Screen Time guide walks through all four settings. The structural problem stays, though. A daily budget spends itself silently on autopilot opens all day, then picks its fight with you at night, when you are least equipped to win it.
Per-visit windows beat daily budgets
Flip the shape. Instead of one big budget that ends in a standoff, decide per visit, at the door. Opening TikTok triggers one question: what did you come to do? Watch the video your friend sent, ten minutes of chosen downtime, whatever is true. The window starts with your reason attached, and when it ends, a time check shows you what you said going in. It is remarkably hard to argue with your own sentence from twenty minutes ago.
Walking away from For You
Some opens will not survive the question. You tap the icon, Scout asks why, and there is no answer, just the reflex. Closing the app right there is the whole skill, and it deserves to be counted as a win, not experienced as a loss. Stack enough of those and TikTok quietly moves from "place I disappear into" to "app I visit on purpose".
Good questions
Does TikTok have a screen time limit?
Yes. In TikTok, Settings and privacy, then Screen time, you can set a daily limit with a passcode and sleep reminders. It is genuinely worth switching on, but it is a prompt you can dismiss, and For You is designed to make dismissing feel natural.
How long should a TikTok visit be?
As long as the reason needs. Checking the video a friend sent is a few minutes. Chosen downtime might be twenty. The number matters less than the fact that you picked it before the feed started, because a window chosen in advance is the one that ends.
